You make some very good points. I think DW and the Fertita brothers have basically dug a moat around their castle, and surprisingly, pretty much all of their enemies have drowned in the moat. The profit margin must be pretty slim, and they are acutely aware of how difficult it is to stay afloat promoting MMA events.
When the time is right, I'm sure they have have plans waiting to be implemented.

I think Strikeforce is going to succeed this time...
Looking at their new hype, their increasing stable of good fighters, and their free primetime show on a major network, They are taking the steps to move MMA into the future. Advertising dollars have way more long term potential than PPV dollars, IF you can make MMA a mainstream sport. Plus, In Fedor they have the best HW and in Mousasi they have one of the best MWs. The UFC is going to have to recognize the shift

They have some big names and they pay those big names big money (mainly Fedor) if something happens and Fedor loses I would expect that strikeforce might have a very hard time recovering from that. |

yeah same, i think strikeforce has too small of a roster to surpass ufc.
with only around an average of ten fighters more or less in each division, it is going to get hard making new exciting fight cards with out some top tier new talent. it looks like each weight class has an desisive champs in it too, such as fedor, mousasi(maybe), and that zamborosskis guy or whatever. they just have a couple big names that fought in pride/dream but it looks like nothing will really get too exciting up in strikeforce. ufc needs to hurry and man up and buy out strikefrce because i really don't like that scott coker guy for an odd reason and M-1 global sucks

I admit things look good for Strikeforce, but the UFC is still the UFC. Just too many top end guys. Strikeforce has like a handful compared to the ufc. |

Dana has said semi-recently I think that they're just waiting to get the "right" deal as far as network TV goes. I wouldn't be surprised to see the UFC putting on big, free shows in the not-so-distant future. And you know what will be interesting? To see the kind of numbers that UFC 105 does this weekend. It's free, so the numbers could be comparable to Strikeforce. Hell, I bet the UFC is actually higher than Strikeforce, even though Strikeforce was on CBS (a channel that everybody gets, right?) and the UFC will be on Spike (a channel not everybody gets). If the UFC does more, that'll be interesting, because it's not like it's a great card or anything.
Also, I'm not sure what would exactly be a better money making scenario. If people are going to buy your PPV's (and a lot of us do) then I'm sure there's a lot of profit in that, compared to television. The UFC has some big-name sponsors too, Bud, BK, Harley, etc. I don't think they're in any sort of danger from being knocked off their pedestal, because if Strikeforce is free, then it's not like people are spending their money on it, so they'll still buy the UFC cards too. I'd like to see what Strikeforce could do with a PPV, but I don't think it would be very impressive.
